I. General
ChartLogic, Inc. (CI) is dedicated to quality products to provide the medical community with the best performance and user experience possible. To attain these goals, CI has implemented network infrastructure and hardware requirements. All ChartLogic® systems should be purchased through, staged, and installed by CI to ensure proper operation and peak performance.
The following sections detail the MINIMUM requirements for components and systems that make up a “CI certified” environment.
II. Network infrastructure requirements
• Category 5e or CAT6 cabling must be installed throughout the office for all data communication.
• All devices on the data network must perform at 100 Megabits/second or greater.
• ChartLogic® servers should connect to the network at 1Gigabits/second.
• TCP/IP only networking protocol is required.
• All network devices (switches, printers, fax, scanner, etc.) should be certified by CI for proper operation. Network hubs are unacceptable on the network.
• Any switch to switch connection must be a minimum of 1Gigabits/second (uplinks or trunks)
• A Windows domain (Active Directory) should be configured whenever more than eight computers exist on the network. Windows workgroups are adequate for installations smaller than 8 systems.
• The ChartLogic® SQL database server should be assigned a static-IP address.
• All ChartLogic® stations/users must have read/write access to all ChartLogic® server shares.
• All ChartLogic® PrecisionVoice™ users must have local system Administrator rights.
• ChartLogic PM installations must have high speed internet with enough bandwidth to support the number of CL PM users.
• File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks should be installed on necessary stations.
• Each location must have high speed internet access to at least one ChartLogic® computer.
• All ChartLogic® ChartPull™ locations require at least one permanently assigned (static), public, IP address.
• All ChartLogic® locations should be protected from the internet with an enterprise grade firewall.
• Network must be secure and protected as much as possible from threats from the internet and internal operations. A network security policy should be implemented and followed. This policy should include firewall operations, virus and spyware protection and general operating and usage procedures.
Wireless network infrastructure considerations:
Wireless network options should be considered as an enhancement to the wired network infrastructure and not as an alternate or replacement for a wired network.
• 802.11g is the minimum required wireless protocol. (54Mb/s)
• Wireless bandwidth is highly dependent and effected by the environment that it is deployed into.
• Wireless performance will be less than the wired network and degrades rapidly with environmental situations.
• A comprehensive wireless plan should be engineered to include access point locations, proper antennas, and office environment considerations to attain peak wireless performance.
• Wireless access points should be configured to operate in “infrastructure mode” only.
• WEP encryption should be implemented as the minimum security settings.
• Wireless access points should be configured so they do not broadcast SSID.
• ChartLogic® database severs may not connect to the network via a wireless connection.
III. WAN configurations
In practices where there are multiple interconnected offices there are two preferred WAN options; private point to point and VPN tunnel through internet. Minimum bandwidth of 512Kb/s in each direction is required by ChartLogic®. Bandwidth needs may be higher depending on clinic configuration, replication procedures, ChartLogic PM or other Internet intensive services and may increase over time.
Private Point to Point connections (T1/Frame Relay):
• Frame relay utilizes private connections through a “cloud” to provide interconnectivity to each office. Frame relay is cost effective, reliable, secure and widely available.
• When determining bandwidth requirements domain or workgroup traffic, PMS, File sharing, and internet traffic needs must be considered in addition to ChartLogic® traffic needs.
• A separate Internet connection is generally required as the point to point network is private.
• T1 and Frame relay require a router at all locations.
VPN Tunnel:
• Server to server VPN tunnels can be configured on most high speed internet connections.
• Client to server VPN tunnels are also very effective for remote use.
• A public static internet address is recommended at each location.
• VPN tunnels are cost effective and secure but are not as reliable as a private network.
• Requires a device capable of VPN tunneling at each location. (enterprise class VPN firewall)
IV. ChartLogic® Servers
• ChartLogic® database servers must be server class systems.
• The ChartLogic® database must run on at least one dedicated Microsoft SQL server.
• The dedicated ChartLogic® database server should be used exclusively for the ChartLogic® database and CLX interface and may not provide any other functions to the network or users. This includes but is not limited to domain controllers, DHCP, DNS, file or print sharing, etc.
• An additional server should be installed for domain, file, print, programs, and other network functions.
• Database servers need to be configured with enough RAM and hard drive space to accommodate the needs of the ChartLogic® database, scanned documents, and swap files.
V. Operating systems software
• Microsoft Windows 2003 standard server R2 edition is required on all ChartLogic® database servers. Windows small business server (SBS) edition is unacceptable for the database server.
• Microsoft SQL server edition is required on all database servers.
• Microsoft SQL personal edition is required on all MobileDoc systems.
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional edition is required on all ChartLogic® WorkStations, VoiceStations and fax servers.
• Microsoft XP Tablet edition is required on all tablet computers.
• Adequate Windows and SQL client access licenses (CAL’s), whether user or device, are required for each user or device that accesses the ChartLogic® database or network services.
